Tottenham Hotspur have hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of the Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, with the Serie A side valuing him much higher than Spurs.

This has been suggested by reporter Nicky Bandini, who has been speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk about the Lilywhites’ interest in Zaniolo.

Fabio Paratici has been a busy man this summer and delivered the majority of Tottenham’s transfer business in the early stages of the window, with six new faces through the doors at Hotspur Way.

However, there is now the expectation that the director of football will turn his attention to scanning the market for a ‘luxury’ addition in these final weeks.

And one name that has been reported is Zaniolo, but Bandini believes Jose Mourinho’s side are intent on keeping the 23-year-old in the Italian capital this summer, saying: “Mourinho does not want Zaniolo to go, certainly. And he’s sort of digging his heels in with the ownership and trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“The money that’s being talked about in Italy that I think Roma are going to want to get close to is €55-60m, compared to what Tottenham are hoping for, which I think is very close to €30-35m. So there’s a good gap to bridge between the two sides at the moment, but they are talking about it.”

TIF Thoughts on Bandini’s comments…

We are really interested to see how Tottenham’s final few weeks in this summer’s window come to a close after what was a busy start in the market.

Should Spurs spend big on Zaniolo?

A whopping £150m cash injection was announced the other month, and as it stands, around £90m of that has been spent across their six signings.

So with Spurs believed to be unwilling to match Roma’s valuation of Zaniolo, we question whether there will be any big additions brought in despite the expectations of a luxury signing coming through the door.
