According to Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour, Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga is unlikely to leave the club before the transfer deadline – but they will have a replacement lined up if he does.
Spurs have stormed through the transfer window so far this summer, with seven players incoming while shedding the deadweight in the squad like Steven Bergwijn, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks – who is set for a loan switch to Serie A outfit Sampdoria.
Another player who has been linked with a move away is Tanganga. Earlier in the summer, the defender had been ‘expected to leave‘ and has more recently garnered interest from Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest. However, it appears he is now unlikely to leave before the deadline, but Gilmour claims Spurs will have a replacement in the event he is moved on.
Gilmour told the Last Word on Spurs podcast: “Now at the moment, I was told today [Monday], as things stand, it’s unlikely Tanganga will leave.
“That always comes with the caveat of let’s see what the final few days in the window bring, because genuinely it is so unpredictable, things can change, and you’ll have heard all the stories in the past about certain transfers and what can go wrong and what can go right, how many things need to come together.
“It’s still very much up in the air, but we can only kind of report on a day-by-day basis, I think, when it gets to the stage especially. So as things stand, Tanganga unlikely to leave, so that would suggest, well, no more defenders in, but of course, Tottenham would have to have a replacement lined up if he does go on.”

Spurs have bolstered their defensive options this summer with the addition of Clement Lenglet and they have now officially signed Cristian Romero on a permanent deal after his successful loan from Serie A side Atalanta.
They now have plenty of options including Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies for rotation along with the previously mentioned duo. Injuries are always a problem throughout the season, but they have enough options to send Tanganga out on loan, which would significantly help his development.
Outside of cup games, we think it is going to be difficult for Tanganga to get consistent time on the pitch and get up to match fitness.
However, as Gilmour said, they will have another player lined up if he is still to leave. But if this is the case, it does not make sense for Spurs to let Tanganga go. Why spend money on another player when you have your own youngster who could use the minutes?
