According to The Times (via Daily Mail), Spurs recently stepped up their pursuit of the Italy star by submitting a loan offer with an obligation to buy of £20m.
However, this was rejected by Roma straight away. It now appears that not only did the Serie A club view the bid as too low, but they were also left angered by Tottenham’s offer as it fell so short of their valuation.
Indeed, when speaking about this on the Talking Transfers podcast, Walsh said: “Nicolo Zaniolo – been going on for a while, this one.
“Spurs had a loan with obligation to buy bid knocked back by Roma, who weren’t happy that Spurs’ numbers in the bid were about €25m upfront plus €10m in add-ons.
“They’re looking for at least €50m. And so I can completely understand why Roma are not happy about that.”
Still only 23 years of age,
However, he has struggled with injury issues already in his career, most notably suffering two cruciate ligament ruptures in 2020. And so it’s easy to see why Spurs would prefer to get him on a cut-price deal.
Despite that, it seems as though Roma have no intention of letting him go on the cheap. So if Spurs really do want to get this deal sorted, they’d better improve their next offer or else they could spurn their chance of any transfer.
