Journalist Alasdair Gold has slammed defender Eric Dier for his efforts in Tottenham Hotspur’s most recent match.

In the Premier League this weekend, Spurs travelled across London to play rivals Chelsea in what turned out to be a rather heated London derby.

While goals came from Kalidou Koulibaly, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Reece James and Harry Kane in the 2-2 draw, managers Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel were caught up in a fiery clash on the full-time whistle that saw both men sent off.

However, despite all that, Dier also seemed to draw attention for the wrong reasons with his performance, particularly off the ball. Indeed, in the player ratings for football.london, Gold gave the Englishman a 6/10 for his efforts.

The journalist also wrote: “Some shaky moments out of possession with his decision-making but also a couple of big tackles and he was a major presence in the Chelsea box late on.”

TIF Thoughts on Eric Dier and Tottenham…

With Gold highlighting some of the less impressive aspects of Dier’s performance, the Tottenham man didn’t fare too well in SofaScore’s statistics, either. He lost possession 17 times, won only 1/4 ground duels and was also dribbled past on one occasion.

Dier has started this season as a key cog in Conte’s plans, having starting both league games, and that was much the same throughout last season as he played in 35 matches out of a possible 38.

And while that certainly suggests he is a trusted man in the heart of the defence, only that late equaliser from Kane spared the Tottenham backline from a poor day at the office. Next time out, he’ll have to do better if he wants to help Spurs in their push for success this term.
