Journalist Dean Jones has claimed Tottenham Hotspur is the preferred destination for James Maddison amid recent news on bids from elsewhere.

Jones has been speaking on The Done Deal Show to discuss the latest on the 25-year-old’s future, with a new club emerging as a potential suitor over the weekend.

Reports over the last few days have suggested Newcastle United submitted a bid for the Leicester City midfielder this weekend, but their £40m offer was quickly rejected.

Leicester are believed to be open to offers for the 25-year-old this summer as they look to fund their window, but it is reported it would take around £60m to prise the Englishman away from the King Power Stadium.

However, Jones believes a move to north London is what Maddison would prefer this summer, with Tottenham and their rivals Arsenal said to be his preferred landing spots.

He said: “I don’t get any signs so far that James Maddison actually wants to join Newcastle. From what I hear, James Maddison wants to join Tottenham or Arsenal. So if he’s going to leave Leicester, one of those two need to come forward and make an offer.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

This should be hugely encouraging for Spurs if they are seriously in for Maddison this summer, but it does not come as a particularly big surprise to us.

It is apparent the Toon have big aspirations for the future under their Saudi-based ownership but what would they have to offer Maddison now that Spurs are not able to? Since Jones’ comments, it appears that Newcastle are set to test the water once more with an improved offer of around £50m for Maddison – though the journalist’s claim would also suggest that agreeing a fee may not mean much in terms of bringing the midfielder to Tyneside.

Meanwhile, The Lilywhites can boast one of the world’s most highly rated managers, Champions League football and the appeal of living in London, which seems to be a big attraction for some players.

I don’t care which of the two we get.. They are BOTH top players!

The difference in cost though means we could get Traore as well as Zaniolo for the cost of Maddison.

    Something perhaps to consider.
