Football Daily’s Dougie Critchley has offered his verdict on the latest reported Tottenham Hotspur signing set to walk through the door this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, young wing-back Destiny Udogie will have his medical at Spurs this week as he seals a move to the north London club. He will not play a part for Antonio Conte’s side until next season, however, as he goes back to Udinese on loan.

Speaking on the reported deal on Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes, Critchley said:

“I think this is very intelligent from Paritici and Conte – and Spurs, really, rather than Conte.

“I think they are potentially preparing for the fact that Conte might not be there any longer than 18 months, two years, unless it goes exceptionally well.

“You imagine that, unless they start challenging for major honours, is he going to really stick around for a third year? Probably not. So it feels like they are preparing for that, signing one of the best, most impressive, young wing-backs in Europe.”

TIF Thoughts on Udogie…

The reported deal continues a summer of progression at Tottenham Hotspur, who have added impressive depth in the transfer window. Whilst Udogie won’t have an impact right away, he is one for the future at just 19 years old.

Last season in Serie A, he managed five goals and four assists in an incredibly impressive individual campaign for Udinese. Meanwhile, defensively, Udogie managed to average 1.8 tackles per 90 according to WhoScored. The aim this season will now be to impress Conte from afar and put his name in the hat for a place in the 2023/24 Spurs squad.

In the Premier League this season, it’s been a case of so far, so good for Spurs with their opening day 4-1 win over Southampton sending a statement around the division, while their battling qualities were on show and they snatched a late draw at Chelsea, so it could well be that Udogie ends up joining a flourishing side this time next year.
