Tottenham Hotspur have landed an absolute bargain this summer with the signing of Destiny Udogie from Udinese.

This has been suggested by Alasdair Gold, who was speaking on his YouTube channel as the Lilywhites were finalising the deal for the Italian.

On Tuesday evening, the north London club announced the signing of the 19-year-old left-back in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £15m.

Udogie is now set to return to the Serie A side for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign before joining back up with his new club next summer.

And as a result of allowing Udinese to keep Udogie for another season, Gold believes Spurs have been able to land a bargain in acquiring one of Italy’s rising stars.

He said: “It’s a real bargain deal for the Udinese [left] wing-back. Some kind of talk about it being up to £20m and more. But from what I understand and speaking to people today, it’s £15m plus another £3m in potential add-ons. That’s a bargain.

“Obviously, they’re getting him back for a season, Udinese, on loan, which is why the price is reduced, but in a way, Spurs don’t need him now.

“And it’s a massive kind of development thing for him, I think, to play another season there. He will quite likely, I’d imagine, get a senior Italy call-up as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

We have to agree with Gold. Udogie has shown signs of becoming a real threat from the left wing-back position last season, having found the net five times and provided three assists in Serie A alone (via Transfermarkt).

We think it is really smart business from Spurs by getting a reduced fee for sending Udogie back on loan as they currently have two left wing-backs who are battling it out for a starting spot in Antonio Conte’s XI.

And we also think it could be a sign to Ryan Sessegnon that he must continue to improve this season with Udogie coming back next summer to also provide competition for his place.

What is also a potential boost for some Spurs fans is that Conte is looking to bring in players for the long term as well as the short term amid reports over a potential contract extension.
