According to journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham Hotspur are still looking for a new signing before the transfer deadline, with Yannick Carrasco thought to be leading the way as the most likely to sign.
So far this summer, Spurs have been one of the big spenders as they have racked up a huge £152.91m bill according to Transfermarkt, with the club welcoming players such as Richarlison, Djed Spence and Yves Bissouma to name a few.
Despite this, they are still looking to add some more top-class talent before the transfer window closes on Thursday night. Recently, they have been linked to the likes of Daniel James, Hakim Ziyech and Adama Traore – but it looks like someone else could be at the top of their shortlist.
In a recent episode of Ranks FC, Jones said he believes Atletico Madrid and Belgium star Carrasco is leading the race to join the north London side before the end of the window after picking up a lot of traction.
He said: “Carrasco is the one that, as I say, has had the most hype in the last 24 hours, and right now kind of looks the most likely man to come in and fill this role in Conte’s 3-4-3 formation.”
TIF Thoughts on Carrasco to Spurs…
Spurs already have a number of players able to play in the wing-back position, with Ivan Perisic, Spence, Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal and Ryan Sessegnon all available and ready to play. Adding Carrasco – who has been hailed as a ‘complete’ player in the past – might be overkill, but it would definitely improve the squad.
While yet to grab a goal or assist in the first three games of this season, he picked up six goals and seven assists last season for Atletico, while ranking in the 98th percentile for shot-creating actions and non-penalty expected goals, as well as in the 95th for progressive carries compared to other players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues (as per FBref).
It is currently unknown how much it will cost to prise Carrasco away from the Madrid team, but with his contract due to expire in the summer of 2024, Spurs could get a great deal for a player who is still just 28 and can have an immediate impact on their team. This would be a great transfer both for now and the next few seasons as the Lilywhites chase that elusive trophy.
