The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has taken aim at Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min after his first-half display against Nottingham Forest.

The forward won the Premier League Golden Boot last season, scoring 23 goals in what was an excellent campaign. He hasn’t been as prolific this time around, however, with no goals to his name ahead of the match against Forest.

During the first half against the newly promoted side, he continued to look below his best, and missed a one-on-one effort when clean through on goal, before the offside flag went up to spare his blushes.

Having his say on the out-of-form forward, Eccleshare tweeted: “THFC pretty average in the first half for the third game running. But they’re ahead, and as it stands on course to be third with 10 points from first four games. Strange. Son not great again, PEH impressive.”

TIF Thoughts on Son Heung-min…

Son must rediscover his best form quickly with £60m signing Richarlison waiting from the bench and ready to take a starting place. Such is the depth of Antonio Conte’s Spurs squad these days, it won’t take much for the players of a certain calibre to play their way into the starting lineup.

Of course, the main positive for the north London side is that others have been able to step up in Son’s place to score the goals to match Harry Kane’s continued efforts. But if he doesn’t regain his golden touch soon, can Spurs really replace his 20+ goal output? We’re not so sure.

As his barren run in front of goal continues, more and more questions will be asked of Son – some of which he may struggle to answer in the Premier League this season.
