Journalist Michael Bridge has claimed that it was a hard watch for the Tottenham Hotspur players who have not been involved with the first team.

Tottenham Hotspur emphatically won 4-1 on Saturday against Southampton in the opening fixture of the 2022/23 Premier League season, despite going a goal down, but there was no place in the matchday squad for Sergio Reguilon, Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks, or Giovani Lo Celso.

Lo Celso and Ndombele spent the second half of last season on loan away from Spurs, whilst Winks has been linked with a move away from the club. Whereas, Spurs opted to sign Ivan Perisic who occupies the left-wing back role meaning that Reguilon had no place in the squad due to Ryan Sessegnon getting the nod in the starting XI.

With the four senior players not being involved in the match day squad on Saturday, Bridge spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that it was demoralising to watch them train away from the group and do separate running.

“I was at the training ground last Thursday and the first team were training, and you see them four on the edge of the pitch on the other side watching, and then they go and run with one of the fitness coaches.

“I don’t care how much money they’re on, it’s demoralising, I was demoralised for them, it was quite a hard watch, especially Winks, who’s been there from day one,” Bridge said.

TIF Thoughts on Bridge’s comments…

The four players mentioned above are all senior pros, so it will be interesting to see if they are still at the club at the end of the transfer window, because Spurs might be hoping to get them off the wage bill, and they might want to force moves to get regular game time, but the issue lays with clubs wanting to sign them,

For example, Winks was linked with Everton, but the Toffees were not prepared to meet Spurs’ asking price for him, so they have seemingly pulled out of the deal and we could see a similar tale with the other outcasts mentioned.
