Journalist Alasdair Gold expects Tottenham Hotspur will be in the market next summer for a new goalkeeper.

As things stand, the Spurs number one is club captain Hugo Lloris. However, at the end of the season, he will be 36 years old and so it would make sense for the club to start planning for a future without him.

Even so, Gold has said that he doesn’t expect any movement from Tottenham in the remainder of the window in regards to that position, but has predicted that a ‘potential successor’ will be looked at next summer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he explained: “I think that’s one for next summer. I’m sure they’ll be looking at these young goalkeepers now.

“But for right now, Hugo Lloris is more than up to the job and the fact that he signed a two-year deal suggests that they think you know, that he’s definitely going to be at the top of his game – he’s a very fit guy, his reflexes don’t seem to have dulled at all.

“So I think that is one for next season when they start to look at that potential successor. And that may not even be for that season it may be for someone for the next summer after.”

TIF thoughts on Hugo Lloris and Tottenham Hotspur…

As Gold mentions, Lloris signed a two-year contract extension in January, so in the short term at least Spurs seem fairly happy to commit to the Frenchman.

On top of that, having just signed 34-year-old Fraser Foster on a free, it’s not as if they’ve gone out and brought in a guy who will be expected to take over from the current number one at some stage in the future.

With over 400 appearances for the north London club, they’ve certainly been able to rely on the veteran over the years. And while it would be wise to start planning for life after Lloris, it seems as though that one can wait until next summer.
