Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Southampton are ‘100%’ interested in signing James Garner before the transfer window shuts.

According to TalkSport, Southampton are one of the Premier League clubs interested in luring Garner away from Old Trafford, with the 21-year-old yet to make an appearance for Manchester United this season.

Garner has been told that he can leave the club this summer, with Erik ten Hag not seeing him as part of his future plans, which is what has sparked interest from several top-flight clubs such as the Saints.

In light of this, Crook told GiveMeSport that Southampton are one of the clubs interested in him – but they face competition from Everton, who are also tracking his progress this summer.

He said: “Southampton 100% are interested. Everton as well, I believe, have shown an interest.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Garner spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest in the Championship and played a key role in the side that got promoted to the Premier League. He featured 49 times for them in all competitions, so it might have come as a surprise that he has not re-joined them.

Southampton have already made six signings this summer, and Garner could be a relatively easy one to get through the door with him being out of favour and if United are indeed keen to offload him – especially as he might be looking to force a move in search of regular football.

The Saints have opted for a youthful approach this summer when recruiting new players, as the oldest player Ralph Hasenhuttl has signed is 25 years old, and with Garner just 21, he certainly fits the mould, while having featured regularly last season in the Championship, he might be ready for the step up.
