Southampton: Club would like to add another forward

Southampton would like to add another forward to their squad before the transfer window shuts in September.

That is according to TalkSport reporter Alex Crook, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the Saints’ transfer plans following the Premier League’s kick-off.

Southampton have signed 20-year-old striker Sékou Mara from Bordeaux this summer, but the forward didn’t make an appearance in Ralph Hasenhüttl’s matchday squad for the club’s 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Meanwhile, Armando Broja had a successful loan spell on the south coast last season, but his return to Chelsea means that the Saints are still short in that centre-forward slot with just a few weeks of the transfer window remaining, with Scotland striker Ché Adams being linked with a move to Leeds United this summer.

And Crook believes that Hasenhüttl is looking for the right player in attack for the remaining weeks of the transfer window, with the club having the budget to make a solid signing.

He said: “They definitely want one more forward. They’ve got a fairly decent budget to spend on that forward, too.

“Liam Delap is on their list, but at this stage, he is more likely to leave Man City on loan.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

We agree with Crook in the sense that Southampton are now lacking in a real quality forward, especially with Mara being left out of their most recent squad and Adams potentially leaving the club.

Fellow journalist Fabrizio Romano seems to agree that the club were interested in Liam Delap, but Stoke City were thought to be favourites to seal a temporary move, with City preferring the youngster to go out on loan this season, while Southampton’s £16m bid for the striker was rejected.

We believe that it would be in the club’s best interests to identify a striker target as quickly as possible so they aren’t left short-changed come the end of the transfer window.
