Southampton’s potential loan signing of Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi would be “a real signing of intent” this summer.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the Saints’ potential transfer plans during the remaining weeks of the transfer window.

According to Sky Sports, Hudson-Odoi, described as a “big player” by Frank Lampard, has told Chelsea that he would like to leave the club this season, in search of regular first-team football.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Leicester City and Southampton are interested in a loan move for the 21-year-old this summer, whilst Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are also thought to be interested in a temporary switch for the winger.

West Ham United and Everton are also thought to have an interest in the Chelsea starlet.

And O’Rourke believes that the signing of Hudson-Odoi for Southampton, would be a real statement to the rest of the Premier League this summer.

“There’s been a bit of a change at Southampton this year, going down the younger route of signing younger players, in which Hudson-Odoi also fits that bill as well.

“But yeah, on his day Hudson-Odoi is a top attacking player in the Premier League, so if Southampton were to get him, I’m sure they’ll have to beat off a host of clubs to get him, and again it would be a real signing of intent from Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments

We agree with O’Rourke and believe that Hudson-Odoi would be an impressive signing for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side this summer, and a move for the winger could happen if the Chelsea academy product believes that the south coast is the best place for him to develop.

The three-time England international has made 126 senior appearances for Chelsea, scoring 16 goals and providing 22 assists in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, we believe that Hudson-Odoi would be a fantastic addition on loan for the Saints this season, and we think that Hasenhüttl should be pushing the Southampton board to get this deal over the line.
