Southampton are close to signing a forward currently playing in the Premier League.

That’s according to TalkSport’s Alex Crook, who told GiveMeSport earlier this week that the club were hoping to bring in another attacker.

Southampton did sign 20-year-old striker Sékou Mara from Bordeaux this summer, however, there was no place for the youngster in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad for the 4-1 defeat at Tottenham last weekend.

The Saints scored 43 times in the league last year, more than just six sides in the division, with half a dozen coming from loanee Armando Broja, who has since returned to Chelsea.

They have been continuously linked with a return for the Albanian this summer, but it is unknown whether that is the name Crook was referring to.

Speaking on the TalkSport GameDay podcast, he said:

“They’re close, I believe, to signing a Premier League-based forward. I don’t know who it is yet, I’m frantically trying to find out, but I think he will be coming in.”

Do you think Southampton need a new striker?

Hampshire Live recently reported that the Saints could listen to permanent offers for Che Adams amid interest from Everton while Crook previously told GiveMeSport that Adam Armstrong could be moved on should Hasenhuttl get another striker in.

The pair scored seven and two goals respectively in the Premier League last season but with a worrying defensive record, that saw only three teams last season concede more goals in the top flight, the Saints could well need a striker to bail them out of trouble at the other end of the pitch and this development will no doubt be welcomed among supporters.
