Journalist George Caulkin has been speaking on Pod on the Tyne about what he was told following Newcastle United’s latest game about their transfer business.

Newcastle managed to maintain their unbeaten start to the season last Saturday when they picked up a hard-fought point away from home, which has them sitting very pretty in fifth – something that may have been unthinkable nearly 12 months ago when it took them 15 games to pick up their first win.

Despite picking up a valuable point away to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Magpies failed to register a single shot on target, which only goes to highlight their desperate need to bring in attacking reinforcements before the transfer window shuts.

Caulkin believes that Newcastle will still bring in at least one attacking reinforcement this summer.

He said: “I still think we’re waiting for the market to really shake itself up in terms of those late loans, I think that is a market that Newcastle will be looking at.

“They know they need at least one attacking player and that’s been confirmed to me at the weekend after the Brighton game. It’s not something they didn’t know.

“They’re not going to throw stupid money at it, we know that. It has to be the right player. I’ll repeat something that I’ve said before, again, that’s come from the club: it’s not a great window for great players.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s remaining transfer business…

Something that Newcastle fans can’t knock the club for is that they are trying to bring in the right players, with bids having been lodged for the likes of James Maddison, Jack Harrison, Joao Pedro and Moussa Diaby, with all of them being knocked back by their respective clubs.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

According to Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle are preparing to go back in for Pedro with an offer which may total around £30m, and the Brazilian would be able to play anywhere across the frontline in Eddie Howe’s 4-3-3 formation, as well as being young enough to still be coached and developed into a top player.

However, there are now just over two weeks left of the transfer window and Newcastle have four games in that time period, which could also make deals slightly more difficult to complete when the focus will be on picking up three points on the pitch, so PIF have to start moving quickly and decisively.
