Journalist Chris Waugh has been speaking on the latest episode of Pod on the Tyne about how Newcastle United may now look more prominently at the loan market.

It has been a frustrating second half of the transfer window for Newcastle and Eddie Howe, who have failed to make a breakthrough in the market since bringing in marquee signing Sven Botman on 1st July.

Despite them looking very impressive against Nottingham Forest last Saturday and dominating the game with 23 shots, it did require two outstanding finishes from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson to break down the opposition’s defence, which shows how badly attacking reinforcements are needed.

Waugh believes that some Chelsea players could now be on the cards when it comes to potential loan deals, including Armando Broja – who they’ve been linked with this summer.

Should Newcastle sign Broja?

He said: “I think that it’s looking increasingly likely that it may be Newcastle get one permanent and then maybe one loan signing later in the window, someone like Armando Broja or others at Chelsea; my understanding is they’ve asked about others there [and] other players at top-six clubs as well.”

TIF Thoughts on this potential transfer strategy…

It would certainly show how difficult this transfer window has been for Newcastle if they only end up with one permanent attacking signing throughout the entire summer, but it’s not like they haven’t tried to land top players such as James Maddison, Jack Harrison and Moussa Diaby.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

However, bringing someone in on loan that is looking to prove himself such as Broja or Callum Hudson-Odoi could work for all parties, as the Magpies can almost try before they buy, and the players can perhaps earn themselves a starting spot in the Premier League or prove to Chelsea why they deserve to be playing for them.

Broja, however, is said to want first-team football this season, and as long as Callum Wilson can remain fit, it may be considered unlikely that he would start many games for the Magpies, which may make agreeing a deal to bring him to Tyneside rather difficult.
