Chris Waugh has confirmed on Pod on the Tyne that Newcastle United are interested in Edson Alvarez, but doubts whether they will be able to bring him in before the transfer deadline.

Reports claim that Newcastle have already seen one bid knocked back for Alvarez of over €30m (£25.8m), and although it’s been reported in the Netherlands that a £34m bid is on the way from Newcastle, the amount of players Ajax have already lost will likely see Alvarez remain where he is this summer.

However, Waugh has indeed confirmed that the Magpies have looked at Alvarez as a potential signing, especially given the injuries to both Jonjo Shelvey and Bruno Guimaraes, although Waugh isn’t confident that Newcastle will land the Mexican this summer.

Waugh has been speaking about Newcastle’s interest in Alvarez and the chances of him turning up on Tyneside.

He said: “They’ve looked at a few different players. Edson Alvarez at Ajax they like, but I don’t think they’re going to be able to afford him permanently this window, so I don’t see that one necessarily happening.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Alvarez and a new midfielder…

It seems pretty obvious that Newcastle and Eddie Howe are in need of at least one new central midfielder arriving prior to Thursday’s deadline with Shelvey set to be out for months and Guimaraes set to miss a few games, leaving Howe with just four options to choose from in his favoured 4-3-3 formation.

We feel Alvarez would be a great signing for Newcastle as he’d be the type of player that could release the likes of Joe Willock and Guimaraes to get further forward, as the Mexican ranks in the top 2% of players in his position when it comes to clearances and is also compared to Wilfried Ndidi by FBref, so he could come in as that defensive enforcer.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

This deal appears to be one that Newcastle may have to revisit in January or even next summer given the exodus that’s already occurred at Ajax, and as Waugh alluded to, they won’t be able to get him permanently due to the asking price, while it is now very late in the window and Newcastle have splashed out well over £200m in 2022 alone.
