Football Daily’s Zac Djellab believes Newcastle United could look to replace Eddie Howe if he does not start the season well.
After a poor start to the 2021/22 Premier League season, Newcastle brought in Howe and ended up finishing 11th in the table while bringing in a plethora of talent including Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn.
So far this summer, they have continued bringing in talent with Sven Botman joining, but Djellab feels that if the Magpies do not start the season well, Howe could be in trouble – and it has been rumoured in the past that Jose Mourinho could replace him.
Discussing who could be the first Premier League boss to face the sack this season, Djellab said on Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes Show: “If things don’t go according to plan for the first 10, 12 games of the season, Newcastle will look there, and is that supposed rumour Jose Mourinho and Newcastle have been talking about a possible management takeover at Eddie Howe’s first bit of unsuccessful time.”
TIF Thoughts on Mourinho to Newcastle…
With their new signings and improved form under Howe, Newcastle have been tipped to challenge for a top-half finish and maybe even push for a European spot.
However, considering their level of spending, which hasn’t finished yet, there will be a lot of pressure on Howe, and therefore, it is arguably plausible that a poor run of form could see Newcastle replace him with an elite-level manager.
One of these managers could be Mourinho, as back in October 2021, when the Saudi Public Investment Fund took over, the former Chelsea manager said he has an ’emotional connection’ to the club as a result of his relationship with Sir Bobby Robson.
However, Mourinho has reaffirmed his happiness at current club Roma and as they have recently brought in superstar Paulo Dybala, it would be hard to see him leaving any time soon. But football is a mystery and anything could happen.
