Journalist Ross Gregory believes the links between Newcastle United and a potential move for Julian Draxler are just ‘agent talk’ – and the forward is not high on the club’s shortlist.

Ever since the introduction of the Saudi Public Investment Fund as the new owners of the Magpies, they have been linked with a number of huge talents including Kylian Mbappe, Victor Osimhen and Memphis Depay – but none have come to fruition.

Another star they have recently been linked with is Draxler from Paris Saint-Germain, with French outlet Le10Sport suggesting the Toon have made contact over a potential deal. However, Gregory has claimed the club are not interested in the player and the links could just be agent-driven.

Gregory told NUFC Matters: “It’s not one that I’ve been made aware of that there’s interest there. I think that one possibly is a bit of agent talk or agent-driven or something along those lines.

“I might be wrong – no doubt, I’ll come back on here in a week’s time and Newcastle have signed him and I’ll look like a fool.

“But Draxler’s not one that’s high on the list that I’m aware of anyhow.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Gregory’s comments…

While it might be a mixture of frustrating and exciting for Newcastle fans to be linked to these types of elite-level players, despite the potential illegitimacy of the links, it is only natural since the takeover, as they have now become one of the richest clubs in world football.

The significant increase in money from PIF will, as Gregory puts it, bring in transfer talk based on agents’ desires to get their clients a big-money move to a club who are on the up and have the potential to challenge for a European place in the biggest domestic league in the world like Newcastle are.

There is no doubt that signing a World Cup winner in Draxler would be a big-name arrival for the Magpies as his experience at a club like PSG can help push the club further up the table, but with how Newcastle have moved in the window so far – bringing in talent at reasonable prices – it doesn’t seem like a Draxler signing will happen anytime soon.
