Journalist Aaron Stokes has said that Miguel Almiron must impress for Newcastle United this season or face being ‘replaced’.

The winger enjoyed a pretty impressive pre-season this summer, scoring six goals and ending up as the Magpies’ top scorer across that period of preparation.

So it was no shock to see him start in the club’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest, though while he delivered a decent performance in the 2-0 win – picking up a 7.20 match rating on SofaScore – he didn’t offer any final product.

Taking his form into account, Stokes has claimed that the Newcastle man has to deliver on a consistent basis, or he could soon fall out of Eddie Howe’s plans.

When talking on the Everything is Black and White podcast, he said: “I really like Miggy, he is a completely honest player, but he flatters to deceive so much.

“Going into the season, he’s had such an amazing summer, six or seven goals in pre-season, he’s looked in the form of his life. He’s got to now show that he can do that in the Premier League on a consistent basis, or he will just fall by the wayside and he’ll be replaced.”

TIF Thoughts on Miguel Almiron and Newcastle…

Considering Almiron now has played in 111 Premier League games but only has nine goals and three assists in that period, it’s not hard to see where Stokes is coming from.

On top of that, Newcastle are clearly in the market for a new attacking threat to be added to their side, with the likes of James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Jack Harrison being linked at times throughout the summer.

And so, while he may have shone in pre-season, if Almiron can’t turn that into something tangible in a competitive match, he could soon ‘fall by the wayside’ – especially if a marquee signing arrives before the end of the transfer window.
