Journalist Dominic Scurr has been left impressed by the display of Fabian Schar for Newcastle United in their recent match.

On their opening Premier League game of the news season, the Magpies hosted Nottingham Forest and claimed an easy 2-0 win at St James’ Park.

Indeed, despite the scores being level at half time, Eddie Howe and co were on top for the most part,  and made their dominance play through Schar before Callum Wilson sealed the win in the 78th minute.

Of all the players, though, it seems as though the Swiss defender in particular stood out. Indeed, Scurr made sure to give Schar 9/10 player rating in the Shields Gazette.

He also wrote: “Made an important block in the first half and kept things relatively calm at the back before he stole the show with a fine 25-yard strike to thump Newcastle into the lead.”

TIF thoughts on Fabian Schar and Newcastle United…

Judging from those comments, it clear just how much the Newcastle defender impressed. And his goal alone was certainly enough to earn plenty of plaudits as he lashed the ball home from outside the box to break the deadlock.

However, beyond that his stats show that he delivered a fine performances in plenty of other parts of the pitch too. According to SofaScore, he had three clearances, three interceptions, two blocks, two tackles, one key pass, was fouled twice, and never dribbled past.

Considering he did all his defensive duties, keeping a clean sheet, while also scoring and even delivering a key pass for a teammate, it’s probably fair to say Schar was at his best against Forest.
