Newcastle United will now be looking to add a midfielder before Thursday night’s transfer deadline following the addition of Alexander Isak.

This has been suggested by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who has been speaking to NBC Sports about the Toon’s plans for the remainder of the window.

The Magpies smashed their transfer record last week with the arrival of Isak, however, Ornstein does not believe they may be done in the transfer market with just a few days of the window remaining.

And he thinks Dan Ashworth may be looking to bring in a midfielder with links to the Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher whose future at Stamford Bridge seems to be up in the air.

Having now brought in four new additions this summer, the Toon are yet to acquire a new midfielder despite having been linked to the likes of Lucas Paqueta for months on end to no avail.

He said: “I think they would take a midfielder on loan to add to Alexander Isak, who has signed, of course, from Real Sociedad.”

TIF Thoughts on Ornstein’s comments…

This will undoubtedly be music to the ears of those on Tyneside after suffering an injury blow to star man Bruno Guimaraes ahead of their trip to Molineux.

Has NUFC's transfer window been underwhelming?

Although this injury is not believed to be a long-term issue, it leaves Eddie Howe without the Brazilian and Jonjo Shelvey in the midfield.

And in their game against Wolves on Sunday, two of the three midfielders’ displays left a lot to be desired, with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock earning 6/10 ratings from The Chronicle.

With this in mind, not only would a new midfielder provide greater strength in depth, but the arrival of someone like Gallagher could provide an upgrade on the likes of Willock in the starting XI.
