Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United are looking closely at Scott McTominay this summer.

Newcastle are said to be one of the clubs in the Premier League looking at the potential signing of the midfielder ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Magpies have still signed just three players in this summer transfer window, but with Jonjo Shelvey picking up an injury, he could be out for three months, so Eddie Howe might be looking to bring in a midfielder before the window shuts.

With McTominay being on the radar of Newcastle, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that they are looking closely at him as they look to add one more midfielder to the squad.

He said: “There is no doubt that McTominay has a few clubs looking at him.

“I know Newcastle are looking at this one closely as they contemplate adding one more midfielder to the squad. West Ham will come in for him too if he genuinely is available.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Newcastle have had a positive start to the 2022/23 Premier League season – especially in their most recent game when they picked up a point against the reigning champions – as they remain unbeaten after three games.

However, Howe might be looking to upgrade his squad, especially in the midfield area because of the recent injury to Shelvey, and McTominay could be a good option due to his experience in the top flight, he has 123 appearances in the Premier League to his name at just 25-years-old.

The Scottish midfielder might also see his game time limited at Manchester United this season due to the recent addition of Casemiro, so he might be keen to force a move away from Old Trafford if his first-team opportunities start to dwindle, meaning a move might not be as outlandish as it may have seemed at the start of the window.
