Newcastle United are interested in signing Harvey Barnes this summer, but have not submitted a bid for the winger as of yet.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the Magpies’ potential summer transfer business for the remainder of the transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side have made three new signings so far this summer and are looking to add more faces to the squad ahead of the transfer window’s closure in September.

The club have been keen to add to their attacking ranks, shown through their reported pursuits of players such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby and Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak.

Now the club have turned their attention to the services of wide-man Barnes, with Leicester City reportedly demanding £50m for the 24-year-old, according to The Sun.

However, Downie believes that the Magpies are currently showing nothing more than interest in the likes of the winger at the moment, with no bids having been registered as of yet.

He said: “I don’t think they’ll just bring in a striker or a winger for the sake of it.

“But the names that you mentioned, Barnes, [Jack] Harrison and [Anthony] Gordon, they’re all players that the club are interested in.

“But I think that’s as far as it goes at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

We believe that Newcastle fans would be delighted to hear that the side are interested in Barnes, but would be more excited over a potential transfer if the club had submitted an official bid for the Leicester man.

The former West Bromwich Albion loanee, who has previously been dubbed as “superb” by Matt Law, would likely be a regular in Howe’s frontline, having scored 11 goals and provided 14 assists in 48 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season – the Toon’s top scorer last term was Callum Wilson with eight.

Therefore, we believe that the Magpies should be going all-out to secure the signing of a first-team player from a Premier League rival, especially when at the age of 24, he is only likely to improve from here on in.
