Newcastle United journalist Lee Ryder was left frustrated by the performance of the winger Jacob Murphy in the Carabao Cup.
Eddie Howe’s men have secured themselves a spot in the third round of the League Cup and will play Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park.
Murphy racked up 33 appearances last season in the Premier League alone where he was able to find the back of the net once and provide two assists (via Transfermarkt).
However, the 2022/23 campaign has not started as kindly for Murphy with just 22 minutes in the top flight under his belt, meaning Wednesday’s start was a real opportunity for the 27-year-old.
But it was apparent Ryder was not impressed with the Englishman’s showing against the League Two outfit as he awarded Murphy with just a 6/10 rating and added:
“Wasteful in possession. Certainly had a couple of clear sights of goal,” wrote Ryder for The Chronicle.
TIF Thoughts on Ryder’s comments…
This game offered players like Murphy with a big opportunity to make a real claim for a spot in Howe’s plans for his Premier League side.
Is Murphy good enough for NUFC now?
Yes
No
However, he did not take that opportunity having recorded just 36 touches throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch in which he lost possession of the ball 14 times (via SofaScore). This was less than Karl Darlow’s 44.
And even his defensive work left a lot to be desired with just one of his four ground duels won and just a single clearance the only noteworthy contribution in defence (via SofaScore).
