Journalist Chris Waugh has claimed on Pod on the Tyne that Dan Ashworth is still very active in the transfer market for Newcastle United.
The Magpies are said to be still very active in the transfer market, with Eddie Howe confirming that they still have a pool of players that are being targeted this summer to improve their squad before the deadline.
However, it is certainly proving difficult to attain targets, with clubs such as Leicester City and Bayer Leverkusen reluctant to lose their top players this summer, which could see Newcastle look to the French market – something they’ve done extensively in the past – with Lucas Paqueta and Bamba Dieng the latest players to be tipped with a move.
While Newcastle haven’t signed anyone since 1st July, Waugh has claimed that Ashworth is still working very hard in the transfer market.
He said: “They are actively working, Dan Ashworth is actively working on that front, and there is still a confidence they will bring in a couple of players between now and the end of the window – and I do think that they need them.”

It will be very interesting to see how Newcastle operate in the final few weeks of the transfer window, as there’s no doubt that they need reinforcements, especially in the striker position given Callum Wilson’s poor injury record and Chris Wood’s lacklustre return in front of goal last season.
However, given that the Magpies are having to work within tight Financial Fair Play restrictions, as explained via football finance guru Swiss Ramble on Twitter, the loan market could well be their best option, especially if it’s a younger player such as Dieng, who could be pushed out of Marseille due to the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.
This is because any loan arrivals will not likely include hefty wages to cover, while having the capacity to grow with the club over the season and allows Newcastle to then potentially have the first refusal on signing them permanently if they thrive in the Premier League.
