Newcastle United: Downie believes club will make at least one more signing

Newcastle United could add two more players to their squad this summer.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the club’s potential transfer business heading into the final days of the transfer window.

The club look have wrapped at least one more addition up this week, as the Magpies secured the signing of Sweden striker Alexander Isak for a fee in the region of £60m from Real Sociedad.

The club have also been rumoured to be interested in the Chelsea quartet of Albania striker Armando Broja, winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, United States wide-man Christian Pulisic and England midfielder Conor Gallagher – though the former two look particularly unlikely given the nature of the Isak deal.

And Downie, who was speaking before the news of the Isak deal broke, believes that Eddie Howe will be allowed to add two or three new players to his squad before the transfer window shuts on 1st September.

He said: “I would be surprised if they don’t bring in at least two.

“So, I think between two or three new players.

“I think any more than that would cause them a problem getting other players out of the door.

“I think two or three, and I think one permanent and either one or two on loan, I think is what they’ll do.

“Obviously, the [four] Chelsea players, we know that they’re interested in the Chelsea players, but they can only get one of those.”

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

We believe that Newcastle fans will be delighted to hear of Downie’s update, as the fans will surely be baying for new signings following the club’s takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in October of last year.

The club have been able to add four permanent additions to the side this summer, with the signing of Isak, Lille centre-back Sven Botman, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope and a former loanee in left-back Matt Targett.

Therefore, we believe that fans of the Tyneside club would be absolutely delighted if they could get a minimum of two more additions over the line before the transfer window’s closure, though it would appear that loans now seem more likely based on Downie’s comments.
