YouTuber and TalkSport pundit Mark Goldbridge has claimed that James Maddison would be the right type of player for Newcastle United to bring in this summer.

Newcastle are keen on bringing Maddison to the club during this summer’s transfer window, but have recently had a second bid rejected for the midfielder, with the Magpies offering a fee in the region of £50m.

Maddison was one of the standout performers for Leicester City last season, as he made 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring 18 goals and chipping in with a further 12 assists.

With Newcastle having a strong interest in Maddison this summer, Goldbridge spoke on his YouTube channel and claimed that he is indeed the sort of player that the Magpies should be looking to bring in.

He said: “I think Maddison is the right sort of player to bring in. Maddison is not a top-four player – he might be a top-four player, but he’s not.

“But what Maddison is, he’s definitely a player that plays for a team who’s in 5th, 6th or 7th, so it’s an intelligent signing by Newcastle, it weakens a rival and it also brings in the quality of player that you need at the moment, and Newcastle need a lot of players that can get you to 5th, 6th – which would be a great season for Newcastle.”

Do you think Maddison could go for less than £60m?

TIF Thoughts on Goldbridge’s comments…

Maddison had 20 goal involvements in 35 Premier League games last season for Leicester, so it is no surprise that they have rejected two bids from the Magpies for him. Therefore, if Newcastle really do want him, they will have to up their offer by a significant amount, with the Foxes valuing the midfielder at £60m.

If Eddie Howe wants to take his side to the next level, we also feel this is the calibre of player that he will need to bring in. Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman are the two most expensive players that have been added at St James’ Park since the club’s takeover, but if Maddison was to join, he is going to cost a record fee.

However, if that’s what it takes to get the Toon into the European places, it is surely a price worth paying, as long as it fits into the structure that Howe has set up on Tyneside.
