Journalist Keith Downie has claimed that Conor Gallagher would be a perfect fit for Newcastle United this summer.

Newcastle have reportedly made Conor Gallagher their number-one target this summer after he has played a total of just five minutes this season in the Premier League so far for Chelsea.

The Magpies were keen on luring James Maddison to St. James’ Park, but after two bids were rejected, with the second being in the region of £50m, they have cooled their interest and seemingly turned to Gallagher as another option.

With Gallagher now being the number one target for Newcastle, Downie spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he would be someone who would fit in well at St. James’ Park, because of his character and how he would fit in with the squad.

“For Eddie Howe, the characters involved are really important. That’s why I feel that Conor Gallagher would be the one that would fit in really well,” Downie said.

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

Gallagher showed some really impressive form last season for Crystal Palace, where he was named Player of the Season. But he has seemingly been out of favour since his return to Chelsea, after featuring off the bench in the final minute of the opening game and then in the 85th minute in their second game of the season, so he might be keen to force a move.

Should Newcastle sign Gallagher?

After Newcastle’s failed attempts to sign Maddison, this could be a blessing in disguise if they can land Gallagher, because he is younger, and he has been given the nod in recent England squads – unlike Maddison.

With Gallagher not starting in the opening fixtures of this season, this could play into Newcastle’s hands, because he might want to get away from Stamford Bridge and go somewhere he will be playing regular football, which is what he will need if he wants to the go to the World Cup in November.
