Newcastle United could look to Ligue 1 in France for potential additions to the squad this summer.

That is according to Dean Jones who was speaking to This is Futbol about the club’s potential transfer business heading into the remaining few weeks of the transfer window.

Eddie Howe has already welcomed centre-back Sven Botman to the club for £35m this summer, who had plied his trade for Lille for the previous two seasons.

The club also dipped into the Ligue 1 market in January, when they signed Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães for £40m from Lyon, suggesting that the club are not reluctant to dip into the French market.

And Jones believes that the Ligue 1 market offers good value for money in terms of transfers at the moment, and it could potentially be somewhere that the Tyneside club looks to recruit players from.

“It could be [a market Newcastle look to sign players in].

“I mean that’s a market [Ligue 1] that’s offering good value at the moment and I think that clubs, you know, we know West Ham will typically look at that market too, not necessarily for a striker now, but yeah, Ligue 1 is a place where there’s a lot of players available for reasonable fees.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that Jones is correct and that Ligue 1 is a very smart place for, not only Newcastle, but Premier League clubs to recruit new additions from.

Howe has already experienced success with the signing of Guimarães during his time at St. James’ Park, and he will be hoping that the addition of Botman will carry on the club’s good fortune from recruiting from the French leagues.

Therefore, we wouldn’t blame the Newcastle scouting team if that was a market they continue to look for additions in, before the window shuts on 1st September.
