Newcastle United would want to sign Conor Gallagher the most, out of the four Chelsea players they have been linked with this summer.

That is according to Keith Downie of Sky Sports, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the Magpies’ potential transfer business, heading into the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

According to The Telegraph, Eddie Howe’s side have taken an interest in four Chelsea players ahead of the transfer window’s closure, including Albania striker Armando Broja, England midfielder Gallagher, and wingers Callum Hudson-Odoi, and United States international Christian Pulisic.

90min report that Crystal Palace and West Ham United have also asked to be informed if Gallagher becomes available for a loan move this season, though there are also reports that suggest Newcastle have tried to encourage Chelsea to sell the £40m-rated talent.

And Downie believes that Newcastle would desire the former Palace loanee, who has been described as a “manager’s dream” by former boss Patrick Vieira, over the other members of the quartet.

“I mean all four of those would improve the Newcastle United starting 11.

“You could put any one of those four in and they would make an improvement.

“Ironically, the one who would probably find the toughest task to get into the team would actually probably be Gallagher.

“Ironically, I feel he’s the one that they like the most, they fancy the most out of the four of them, given how well he did last year.

“You know, he’s already proven in the Premier League that he can cut it.”

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments

We believe that Gallagher, who was hailed as a ‘sensation’, would be a fantastic signing for Howe’s side in normal circumstances, but even more so now after fellow midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been ruled out for an expected 12 weeks following an injury suffered in pre-season.

The 22-year-old had an extremely successful loan at Crystal Palace last season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 34 appearances in a box-to-box midfield role according to Transfermarkt, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.08 for his Premier League performances making him the highest rated player for Vieira’s side last season.

Therefore, we believe that Newcastle should be going all out to add the four-time international to their squad this summer, with Gallagher being an ideal candidate to play in the number eight role on a long term basis at St. James’ Park.
