Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes left club legend Alan Shearer stunned on Saturday following his display in their season opener.

Eddie Howe, fresh off signing a new deal, saw his side cruise to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Tyneside, and the comfortable display was personified by their Brazilian midfielder.

It seems the 24-year-old has picked up from where he left off last season, having taken to the Premier League like a duck to water with five goals from midfield in 17 appearances (via Transfermarkt).

The Brazilian did not get his name on the scoresheet on Saturday, however, he did play a huge part in their win, with Lee Ryder also hailing him with a 9/10 match rating.

And it was apparent Shearer was impressed, as speaking on Match of the Day, the former number nine hailed Guimaraes for his calm display in front of the St James’ crowd.

He said: “Man of the match, for me, was Bruno. The way he handles that ball under pressure and is able to ping that ball into the forward players, he’s so comfortable on the ball, particularly if you give him [a lot of] space. His weight of pass was superb.

“They got into so many good areas because of his ability. He never looks flustered, he always looks in control of the ball, he never panics.

“Newcastle have got a really, really talented player there and the fans love him, and rightly so.

“Absolutely magnificent, I thought he was.”

TIF Thoughts on Shearer’s comments…

We find it impossible to disagree with Shearer’s comments on the Brazilian. Howe has a real gem in his midfield and we think the Toon Army should feel very fortunate to have him at their club.

Are you worried Bruno may leave without European football?

During the 90 minutes, the midfielder racked up 96 touches, provided three key passes and completed 89% of his 72 attempted passes (via SofaScore).

Guimaraes has had a huge impact on Howe’s side, who have now won 12 of the 18 games in which he has played and there does not come any bigger seal of approval than that of Shearer.
