Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin was ridiculed on Saturday afternoon by Toon correspondent Dominic Scurr for his dive against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Eddie Howe’s men shut out their opponents as they had to settle for a draw at the Amex Stadium, which leaves them with four points from their first two Premier League games.

However, there was a moment of embarrassment for the French winger, who was given a yellow card inside the opening 45 minutes on the south coast.

The 25-year-old fell to the floor on the edge of the Brighton box as Alexis Mac Allister made an attempt to win the ball back and was left with egg on his face as Graham Scott wrote his name in his book.

And it was apparent the Frenchman had little to complain about, as Scurr slammed the Toon’s winger for his embarrassing effort to win his side a free kick.

He tweeted: “A laughable dive from Saint-Maximin sees him pick up a yellow card. Brighton have edged the opening 23 minutes here. Water break now taking place.”

TIF Thoughts on Scurr’s comments…

It seems Scurr’s evaluation of the incident was pretty accurate, with Andy Naylor claiming the winger’s attempt to deceive the referee was ‘blatant’, having seen the dive shown on replay screens.

Saint-Maximin has established himself as one of the league’s trickiest wingers and provided 10 goal involvements in the Premier League last season, but he was withdrawn by Howe in the 76th minute having failed to break the deadlock.

And having failed to score since January, perhaps this may be a sign that the Frenchman is growing in desperation in front of goal, but it is certainly something no one wants to see.
