Journalist Aaron Stokes has been left stunned as Brazilian forward Joelinton missed a huge chance for Newcastle United in their recent match.

This weekend, the Magpies took on Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest in their first game if the season as they look improve upon their 11th placed finish of the previous campaign.

Although the home side dominated proceedings during for the majority of the first half, both teams went into the break with the scores tied level at 0-0.

However, Joelinton did have the chance to change that when he went on a super run only to fluff his lines, having done ‘the hard bit’, and waste his opportunity.

Stokes couldn’t hide his shock as he commentated on proceedings during the live blog for ChronicleLive. Indeed, he wrote: “HUGE chance for Joelinton!

“How on earth has he missed that…

“Joelinton picks the ball up in the middle of the park, beats three men as he cuts inside and bears down on goal but drags a shot wide…

“He had to do better there after doing the hard bit… Agonising!”

TIF thoughts on Joelinton and Newcastle United…

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton is now into his fourth season with the club and seems to be truly finding his feet in the team, going through an ‘unbelievable’ turn around in form to win the love of fans after a slow start to his career in England.

And it’s clear that he has the trust of his manager Eddie Howe, having started this first game of the new season against Nottingham Forest.

This recent opportunity, where he managed to beat three men so expertly, showed the confidence and quality he possesses. The miss, though, unfortunately shows that lack of a clinical edge that could explain why he has dropped into a deeper role having initially been signed as a forward.
