Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that he expects some progress to be made by Newcastle United in terms of bringing players through the door.

Newcastle have made three signings this summer, though Matt Targett was on loan at St James’ Park last season, so just two brand new additions to the squad have been made.

Several players have been linked with moves to Tyneside this summer, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Armando Broja two of the names the Magpies have shown interest in as Eddie Howe is looking to bolster his attacking options.

With Newcastle being linked to several players from big clubs, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that they will be interested in any good deals that can help them push on for a European finish in the Premier League.

He said: “I think we can expect some progress. Both Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi have been looked at, so have Broja and Barkley, so Newcastle are just open to any good deals that are potentially out there that could boost their push for top seven.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

It has been an impressive start to the Premier League season for the Magpies after picking up four points from a possible six and keeping two clean sheets along the way, but Howe might still be keen to add some firepower to his attack after failing to score against Brighton & Hove Albion.

It might have come as a surprise to many that Newcastle have not broken the bank this summer, but they have to ensure they adhere to Financial Fair Play rulings, while they have been in impressive form since adding the signings they made in January, climbing to an 11th-place finish in the top flight last term.

However, Jones has claimed that he expects progress to be made, and the four players he has named have been attacking players, so it will be interesting to see who arrives at St James’ Park in the remainder of the transfer window.

It does appear that Chelsea have been targeted as a club that may be open to selling some of their stars, and given the Champions League-winning experience Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi have had at Stamford Bridge, perhaps the winning mentality in west London is a reason for this.
