Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that James Maddison seemed open to a move to Newcastle United in this summer transfer window.
Newcastle United showed a lot of interest in James Maddison this summer, they had a second bid for him rejected in the region of £50m, as fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City are keen on keeping their creative midfielder.
The Magpies have signed three players this summer, all, occupying defensive positions, but they have been linked with several attacking options throughout the window, such as Jack Harrison and Anthony Gordon.
With Newcastle have two bids rejected from Leicester for Maddison, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he had the feeling that Maddison seemed open to a transfer, which is why they submitted the initial bid in the first place.
“Maddison seemed open to a transfer and so they felt that by making an offer to Leicester they might be able to unsettle things a little bit and force something to happen. It hasn’t worked out that way,” Jones said.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
With Leicester reportedly setting their price tag at £60m for Maddison this summer, it will be interesting to see if the Magpies go back in with a third bid for him, or whether they feel that they can spend their money for better value elsewhere.
Newcastle lacked goals last season, their top scorer was Callum Wilson with eight and he was only able to feature 18 times, but he opened his account for the 2022/23 season on the opening day of the season, so Eddie Howe might now not be keen to bring in a new forward and could invest money on a creative midfielder, such as Maddison.
Leicester have made one signing this summer, a backup goalkeeper, so it might be difficult for other clubs to sign their key players, as Chelsea have tried to sign Wesley Fofana, without them getting someone in the door first, which has not seemed likely as of yet.
