According to injury specialist and Sky Sports contributor Ben Dinnery, Newcastle United wing-back, Matt Targett, should be in contention to start his weekend after his 45-minute outing against Tranmere went to plan.

The Magpies booked themselves into the next round of the Carabao Cup after their narrow 2-1 win away at Tranmere. While the result will be important for the club and fans, they also saw a key man return to the pitch for the first time since their opening game.

Left-back, Targett played the first 45-minutes of the game after facing a muscular issue as manager Eddie Howe planned to slowly bring him back into the first team, and Dinnery since has claimed he could feature against Wolves this weekend.

Dinnery said on the Premier FPL Injuries podcast, “Matt Targett played 45 minutes at Tranmere, that was always going to be the case that was planned. So, he came through that unscathed, that was a hamstring issue there. So, he should be in contention this weekend”. (4:22)

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Targett’s return…

The 26-year-old left-back was a key part of Howe’s side last season, picking up 35 appearances for over 3,000 minutes across all competitions with just one goal and one assist.

While star man Dan Burn has done well to fill in at the position in Targett’s absence, bringing back their starting man is going to be a huge relief for Howe and therefore allows him to slip Burn back into the centre-back position to partner new signing Sven Botman.

It is still unknown if Targett will slot straight back into the first team, but considering he has done well with injuries, last picking up a knock in January 2021, he could be ready to play 60-90 minutes already.

Newcastle are due for an exciting Premier League season with new signing Alexander Isak due to join soon. But bringing back a reliable key man like Targett is just as important. He will help sure up their defence and give the fans some reassurance going into their next game.
