Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Manchester United are actively pursuing Sergino Dest in this summer’s transfer window.

According to TalkSport, Manchester United are keen on luring Dest to the Premier League before the window shuts, with Erik ten Hag previously managing the American right-back at Ajax.

Diogo Dalot has started at right-back in the opening two fixtures of the Premier League season, but with back-to-back losses, Ten Hag might be keen to make changes to the squad by bringing in some new players.

And amid the reports stating that Dest is on the radar of United, Crook confirmed this, saying that they are actively pursuing him as they hunt for a new right-back – which will also allow for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to leave.

He said: “They are on the hunt for a new right-back, as well – Sergino Dest at Barcelona is somebody I know they are actively pursuing. That would see Aaron Wan-Bissaka – £50m Aaron Wan-Bissaka – allowed to leave.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Dest played a sporadic role for Barcelona last season, featuring 21 times in La Liga, but Ten Hag might feel that he can bring the best out of the American full-back because of the time that they spent together in the Netherlands.

Wan-Bissaka was out of favour for United last season as he featured just 20 times in the Premier League, so the Dutch manager might be keen to offload him and then have Dest and Dalot competitively battling it out for the first-choice spot at right-back.

However, Dest, who has a €400m (£337m) release clause, is just 21 years old and still has three years remaining on his current contract with Barcelona, so despite talk of him being valued at £17m, it might take a bigger offer from the Premier League club to lure him away from the Catalan giants.

But given it is somewhat desperate times for United, they might just pay a fee to ensure they get him through the door.
