Dean Jones has claimed on The Done Deal Show that Sergino Dest now wants to join Manchester United.

It was indeed Erik ten Hag who handed Dest his first competitive top-flight start for Ajax back in 2019 when he was just 18 years old, so it should come as no surprise that given he’s reportedly available on the transfer market,  United are now showing an interest in the American.

Dest’s move to Barcelona hasn’t been a disaster, with the defender racking up 40 league starts since he joined in the summer of 2020, but having been encouraged to leave by Xavi, he appears to have no future with the Catalonian outfit.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag is seemingly willing to let Aaron Wan-Bissaka go, which would leave a hole in the right-back department – something that Jones believes Dest could fill.

Jones has admitted that Dest is now open to linking up once again with Ten Hag, this time in the Premier League.

He said: “They’re going back and they’re knocking on the door because Barcelona want to get rid of him, and Sergino Dest, there’s not really anywhere else he wants to go.

“Obviously, Ten Hag put a lot of trust in him as a kid, helped him come through at Ajax and get his move to Barcelona.

Would Dest be a good signing for Man United?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“Dest’s fallen away, unfortunately for him at Barcelona, it was a dream move for him. He doesn’t want to give up on it, I guess much like Frenkie de Jong, but ultimately, Barca are trying to include him in swap deals, they’re trying to push him out the door. And the most obvious place right now for him to land his Old Trafford.

“Ten Hag absolutely does want him on board, their right-back slot is one that he’s concerned about and I can actually see Dest happening towards the back end of the window.”

TIF Thoughts on Man United’s interest in Dest…

Dest’s age and familiarity with Ten Hag’s tactics will likely stand him in good stead to succeed and thrive at Old Trafford if the Red Devils do manage to get a deal sorted out with Barcelona.

However, a move for Dest may also depend on Man United’s ability to shift out Wan-Bissaka this summer, as it may not be feasible for the Red Devils to have three right-backs in their squad who are all itching to start league games.

In this quiz, we will take a look at who topped the club's scoring charts and when. First, who was United's top scorer this season?

If Dest – who is interestingly listed as statistically most similar to Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich (as per FBref) – was to arrive, it would see Man United’s back four look almost completely different to last season, with Harry Maguire potentially losing his place in the side, while Luke Shaw was also nowhere to be seen on Monday evening, which could be the first step they need to take in order to get back to the top of the Premier League.
