According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are keeping an eye on Memphis Depay and could make a late swoop for the player – but insists there is no imminent deal incoming.

The Red Devils are desperate to bring in another forward this summer after their poor start to the Premier League season and the transfer saga around the possible departure of star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Depay has been looking for a move away from La Liga giants Barcelona after they picked up the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, and since a move to Juventus fell through, he could yet become a Red Devil once again before the end of the window.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “There have been some contacts between Memphis and Man United to explore the situation. Man United are keeping an eye on the situation of Memphis in case they will have some problems on other deals and keeping an eye on Cristiano Ronaldo till the end of the market.

“But at the moment, it is not something close to being completed. But we are at the end of the market, so Man United have many names in the list – Memphis is one of them, but there is still no direct negotiation. We will see what happens with Memphis Depay.”

TIF Thoughts on Depay to United…

If United only ended up with Depay in their squad before the end of next week, we felt that would have capped a disastrous transfer window having desperately scrambled to find a body to throw in with Ronaldo unsettled.

However, since Romano’s comments, they are now set to welcome Antony to Old Trafford from Ajax, so it remains to be seen how this could affect negotiations. That said, it would be premature to assume things are dead in the water as there is still uncertainty over Ronaldo’s immediate future.

While Depay has played incredibly well since he left United back in 2017 – picking up 76 goals and 56 assists for Lyon and 13 goals and two assists for Barcelona in 37 games – he was horrendous for United, and it is surely a risk to expect things to change the second time around.

Despite the fact that Barcelona are only reportedly looking for around £17m for Depay, this would still be a huge mistake, in our view. United need younger, hungry players like Antony and Cody Gakpo. We feel either of these, while more expensive, would impact the side far more. They cannot waste their money on yet another superstar who is just there to pick up his salary – especially at the expense of another.
