Dharmesh Sheth believes that Manchester United may only be able to ‘accelerate’ a move for Cody Gakpo towards the back end of the transfer window.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the PSV winger this week with the 23-year-old emerging as a ‘more long-term solution’ in the United forward line.

Speaking to talkSPORT, transfer guru Alex Crook is viewed as a ‘cheaper alternative’ to Antony who Erik ten Hag viewed as his primary target in attack.

The £70m asking price appears to have scuppered any chance of the Old Trafford outfit from making a move for the Ajax ace with Gakpo now emerging as another option.

However, Sheth has warned that a move may need to wait.

As posted on the Sky Sports YouTube channel he said:

(5:58) “There are other players that Manchester United are looking at as well. The PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo is another player that United are keen on.

“This one might have to accelerate later on in the month though simply because PSV Eindhoven have made it through to the final qualifying round of the Champions League.

“That will finish with a week left in the transfer window.”

At a price tag touted at reportedly half that (£35m) of the required figure for Antony, it could prove a very smart piece of business from the officials at Carrington if they were to seal a move.

The seven-cap Holland ace enjoyed a stellar campaign last season netting 21 goals and providing 15 assists.

Former Netherlands midfielder Theo Janssen said Gakpo ‘has everything’ and he played a major role as the vice-captain as his boyhood club achieved Dutch Cup success last term finishing the season as PSV’s joint-highest performer on average with a 7.51 match rating.

He bagged a brace in the side’s Eredivisie opener last weekend and will no doubt be a key figure in their two-legged Champions League play-off tie with Rangers.

Defeat to the Scottish club could help United’s chances of landing the flashy winger but it does appear that they will at least have to wait and see the outcome of that tie.
