Manchester United are unlikely to sign Lazio and Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer.

That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from Old Trafford, ahead of the remaining few weeks of the transfer window.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MailOnline) have reported that it now looks more likely that Milinkovic-Savic will remain at the Stadio Olimpico this summer, despite rumours of a move to the Premier League.

The same report suggests that there is no offer on the horizon from United for the 27-year-old this summer, despite being rumoured as being Erik ten Hag’s alternative to long-term target Frenkie de Jong.

And Jones simply doesn’t believe a move for Milinkovic-Savic will happen for the Red Devils this summer.

“I just don’t think it will happen.

“I mean, it’s been talked about so many times like Manchester United and Arsenal and others.

“Anytime I check it out, no one ever seems convinced it’s actually going to happen, that he fancies the Premier League, that it will come together and it seems to be the case again right now.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that Manchester United fans will be disappointed to hear that a move for Milinkovic-Savic seems to be off the cards, especially with it’s looking increasingly likely that de Jong will be moving to Chelsea, if he is to leave the Nou Camp this summer.

The 34-time Serbia international, who has been dubbed as a “complete player” by Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri, ranks in the top 2% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for progressive passes received per 90 minutes (6.17) and for touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 (4.12) over the last 365 days, according to FBref, suggesting that he would be able to drive that Red Devils midfield forward.

Therefore, we believe that fans of the Manchester club will be disappointed that Milinkovic-Savic is a seemingly unlikely option, on top of the fact that de Jong seems to be slipping through their fingers as well.
