According to Caoimhe O’Neill of The Athletic, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would still want to bring in a midfielder before the end of the window – even if they had a fully fit squad.

Liverpool have experienced a disastrous start to their 2022/23 Premier League season as they currently sit 16th in the table after three games after failing to pick up a single win.

A big reason for their poor form is their laundry list of injuries as they have nine first-team players out, with four of them being midfielders, including Thiago, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.

As a result, there have been calls for the Reds to bring in a new midfielder before the end of the window, and while rumours have been quiet at the time of writing, O’Neill has claimed Klopp wants a new player in that position, even without considering their current injuries.

O’Neill told The Red Agenda podcast: “I think if Liverpool didn’t have Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita now added to the list of midfielders that are injured, I still think that he’d want someone new to sort of bed into that team, because it does feel like it’s got a missing link in midfield.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Neill’s comments…

A new midfielder is a crucial area of need for Klopp’s side, as they have a number of players out as stated above, and it has been rumoured Keita is looking for a move away from the club amid unhappiness over his playing time.

In their last match, they rolled out a midfield consisting of youngster Harvey Elliott, 32-year-old captain Jordan Henderson and 36-year-old James Milner. While all of these players are of a high quality, they should arguably not be left to rely on the likes of Henderson and Milner.

The good news for Liverpool fans is that according to The Daily Mail, they are expected to make a move in the next season or two for Borussia Dortmund and England starlet Jude Bellingham, who has cemented himself as one of the best young talents in world football – though they face competition from Real Madrid.

There is no doubt Liverpool still have an extremely talented squad, and once they get their injured players back in the first team, they will once again show they are one of the best teams in England, but if they are to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title, they perhaps do need something fresh in the middle of the park.
