Insider Dean Jones has revealed ‘whispers’ over Frenkie de Jong being a possible midfield target for Liverpool.

It seems as though the Reds will be looking to bolster that part of the pitch in the next days before the summer window slams shut.

Indeed, manager Jurgen Klopp recently admitted that the club would be hoping to sign a new midfielder should the ‘right player’ become available.

According to Jones, that man could well be Barcelona star De Jong – who has been linked with a move away from the club for some time now.

Speaking on the Chasing Green Arrows podcast, he explained: “There’s been a few whispers about De Jong and it would be funny if, after all this time, he ended up signing for Liverpool.

“I mean, the latest news on De Jong is he still doesn’t want to leave Barcelona. He is actually willing to look at the terms of his contract and take a drop and stay. So I think the move to Liverpool looks unlikely at this point.”

TIF thoughts on Frenkie de Jong and Liverpool…

Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, and Naby Keita have all be out recently with injury issues, so it makes sense for Liverpool to chase some more depth in the midfield.

In De Jong they may have identified a top talent too. Indeed, he has been linked with a high-profile move to Manchester United this summer, in the region of £70m.

However, he doesn’t seem keen to leave Barcelona, as made clear by Jones, and so this won’t be an easy deal to complete – even if those whispers progress into anything more concrete.
