Leicester City: Jack Johnson concerned with Wesley Fofana sell-on clause issue

|

Journalist Jack Johnson has been left concerned by the news that Wesley Fofana’s Leicester City exit has a major issue.

The Foxes defender has been heavily linked with a move away in recent times and it looks as though a deal will surely go ahead before the transfer window slams shut.

However, an article in The Times has revealed some extremely bad news for Leicester. According to manager Brendan Rodgers, 25% of Fofana’s touted £70m transfer to Chelsea will be owed to his previous club, Saint-Etienne. This seemingly means Leicester are now not expected to make any big-money signings before the 11pm deadline on 1st September.

In reaction to this potential transfer blow, Johnson took to Twitter to sum up the feeling, as he said: “Uh oh… this isn’t going to go down well.”

TIF Thoughts on Wesley Fofana and Leicester…

Back in 2020, the young defender – just 19 at the time – was sold to Leicester in a deal worth up to €40m (£36.5m). To get the player in, the Foxes had to fend off competition from the likes of West Ham United (via The Guardian).

It seems as though one of the ways they won the race for the player’s signature was to include that 25% sell-on clause, which is now coming back to haunt them.

As of yet, 32-year-old goalkeeper Alex Smithies is the only player to be signed by Rodgers this summer – and if this latest update is totally accurate, it looks like he could be the last man in the door too.

All in all, it’s not hard to see why this might not go down well amongst the club’s fanbase, though late links to the likes of Wout Faes and Jeremie Boga could provide some hope.
