Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison could be holding off on signing a new contract at the club in a bid to keep his options open.

That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the Foxes’ potential transfer plans this summer.

According to Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United made an improved second bid in excess of £45m to Leicester for the services of Maddison earlier this week, with the Tyneside club being led to believe that the 25-year-old would be keen to make the move to St James’ Park.

Edwards also states that this could also be a ploy for Brendan Rodgers’ side to offer the one-cap England international an improved contract, with the attacking midfielder reportedly having two years remaining on a £110k-per-week deal, according to Salary Sport.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is also thought to be an admirer of the Leicester star, though nothing is imminent at the moment, and according to Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports, the Foxes value the Coventry-born midfielder at £60m this summer.

Jones believes that Maddison is potentially holding out for another move to potentially come along, with Spurs mooted as a potential destination.

He said: “I personally wonder if James Maddison would hold out for something else.

“I think Leicester are offering him a new contract, and I don’t think he would especially be keen to snap that up.

“But, with links to clubs like Tottenham, we all know that once the season begins, it only takes one injury elsewhere for a gap to open up, and I think that he’ll probably try to remain open-minded for a little bit.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We believe that Maddison – previously dubbed a “genius” by BBC Norfolk’s Rob Butlerwould be a huge loss to Leicester, but a brilliant signing for Newcastle, Tottenham, or any other club that may acquire his services.

The England hopeful scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 appearances for the Foxes last season according to Transfermarkt, suggesting that he is a crucial part of Rodgers’ attacking output.

We believe that Leicester should be doing all they can to try and convince Maddison to stay with the club this season, whilst Newcastle and Tottenham should be trying their best to obtain his services ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Either way – a decision on whether Madison, Fofana and Tielemans are staying or leaving has to happen within a couple of days! Leicester are being targeted for sure – if they leave, Leicester won’t have time to secure players that can maintain a top half finish! A word of warning to the players – we’ve seen how being dragged into other teams can affect their game – Danny Drinkwater for example!
