90min writer Graeme Bailey has admitted he expects the £80m asking price for Wesley Fofana to be met by Chelsea.

It comes after the insider published a piece revealing that the Blues were increasingly confident of landing a move for the 21-year-old starlet.

Leicester have already knocked back the latest offer of £70m for their promising centre-back, but it is being reported that the west Londoners are readying an £85m move for the French defender.

Paris Saint-Germain are thought to be considering whether or not to make a late attempt to hijack Chelsea’s pursuit, but Bailey feels that the Foxes will ultimately lose their highly rated talent.

Speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast, he said: “If they get to £80m – that’s the magic figure here – and we’ve seen Chelsea do it with Cucurella; I don’t understand why they won’t do it here.

“They started at £60m, they’re at £70m, we understand, at the minute – there’s only £10m apart here.

“I can’t see Todd Boehly letting this player go for the sake of £10m; one of the world’s best young defenders. And it’s such a frightening thought, I thought Chelsea looked okay at the back, but long-term, I think Fofana is a special player and I think this one should get done.

“That’s what we’re hearing, Fofana wants it to be done. If they get to £80m in some sort of deal, it does look like this is going to happen, and the clubs are talking.”

Brendan Rodgers has told the player he isn’t for sale, and journalist Rob Tanner has also acknowledged the manager has made it clear that Fofana’s best chance of making it into France’s World Cup squad is by staying and playing regularly at the King Power Stadium, so the Foxes may still have hope in terms of holding on to the U21 international.

In a month where Youri Tielemans and James Maddison could both become the subject of further interest, Foxes fans will be hoping the future of their key players can be resolved sooner rather than later to at least give their head coach the best possible chance at replacing them.
