According to injury specialist Ben Dinnery, Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward has only resumed light training since picking up a knock for Wales in June, and could be up to six weeks behind the rest of his teammates ahead of their season opener.

After the sale of their star ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel, the Foxes are thin at the position with just Ward and Daniel Iversen in the squad. Therefore, they may well need Ward, who is the most experienced to be ready for their opening game of the season against Brentford.

However, according to Dinnery, Ward has only taken part in light individual training after picking up a knock while on international duty with Wales and could be significantly behind his teammates in terms of being match-ready.

Dinnery told the Premier FPL Injuries show: “The concern is Ward picked up that injury while he was away with Wales earlier in the season and he’s only been involved in very little individual training.

“Now, I haven’t had any confirmation of this, but he was scheduled or pencilled in to play a behind-closed-doors friendly on Monday. Even if he did, he’s still 4-6 weeks behind the rest of his teammates.”

TIF Thoughts on Dinnery’s comments…

The Foxes are struggling in the transfer window so far as they haven’t bought anyone in at the time of writing, and have now lost one of their key stars in Schmeichel to Ligue 1 outfit Nice.

This has now left them with two relatively inexperienced goalkeepers at Premier League level and it could prove dangerous for them if they do not bring someone in before the end of the window.

Ward could be a good stopgap for Brendan Rodgers’ side until they recruit another ‘keeper, but as Dinnery said, the Wales international is significantly behind his teammates in terms of fitness, which suggests he will not be at his peak to face Brentford this weekend.

Brentford are a dangerous side under a good manager in Thomas Frank, and in order for Leicester to pick up the three points, they will need a solid defence – which is currently in question due to their goalkeeping problems.
