Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford’s injury record is worrying journalist and YouTuber Conor McGilligan ahead of the new campaign.

The Whites reporter has been speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel to share his concerns about Jesse Marsch’s side ahead of Saturday’s opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Marsch is now going into the game against Wolves without last season’s top goalscorer Raphinha, and with Luis Sinisterra unavailable through injury, so there is going to be big pressure on Bamford to provide the goals.

There have been links to backup strikers this summer, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain’s Arnaud Kalimuendo said to be on the radar of Victor Orta.

However, following a disastrous campaign riddled with injuries for the 28-year-old, McGilligan believes Jack Harrison – who scored eight league goals last season – will end the season as Leeds’ top scorer.

He said: “So my top scorer, who’s going to be Leeds United’s top scorer this season? I’m going to go with Jack Harrison. I think Jack Harrison is going to get maybe in double figures again, I think it’s going to be from like 11-13 goals, I would expect.

“I think the goals are going to be spread around the whole team. I think Bamford, unfortunately, will miss portions of the season. I think we’ve always seen that with Paddy and it’s going to happen again, in my personal opinion.

“I think as I’ve always said, trends and patterns – that you always see that with Liam Cooper, you always saw that with Kalvin Phillips, you’re going to see that all the time with Junior Firpo and you will see that with Patrick Bamford as well.”

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

We can absolutely see why McGilligan has these fears, as Bamford’s injury, undoubtedly, played a huge role in the struggles that the Yorkshire club endured last season.

Are you worried about Bamford's fitness?

Yes

Yes

In the 2020/21 campaign, Bamford topped Leeds’ scoring charts with 17 goals in the Premier League alone, whereas injuries held him back to just two goals last term.

With this in mind, we do still think it is essential for Leeds to bring in another striker as a backup for Bamford as there will be question marks over how many goals the likes of Joe Gelhardt can provide if needed to step in.

If Patrick is rested now and again and not expected to play game after game at 100mph he should be ok. The striker gets the goals but what is important is the supply. Last year we depended on the wings for this but this year I expect more assists from midfield. Also I expect the midfield to chip in with more goals.

Last season should have been enough of a wake up call for the Leeds board to invest in another striker to at least share the burden with Patrick Bamford. However Orta has not managed to do so and we are yet again displaying Leeds weak underbelly to every team we play against. Leeds should sack Orta and his team. Let’s have someone in that knows what he’s doing.
